As far as I'm concerned, it's just a shape in which to cook material prepared in a way that means some of the other people in the house might forth if they look like beans-whatever, and I'm not going to blow 27 years of marriage out of the water to make a point.
As far as vegetarianism is concerned, I eat meat -- from high-welfare sources only -- on ethical grounds. I value the wildlife and wildlife habitats that millennia of animal husbandry has created in this country. Sorry to sound a bit needlely, but I've had some ferocious arguments with vegetarians about this, and find the 'ethical' opening a bit annoying. The moral high ground seems to consist of lots of hummocks separated by bottomless morbutt.
No, someone producing recipes for people who live on takeaway and cook-chill meals, who have never cooked, and are likely to shy away from procedures that require time and forethought. Start with tinned, discover the end result is good, and they can build up to the notion of soaking and cooking their own.
