Jane: I don't think that they were all pensioners in the tea-rooms that I saw...

Sorry, rant alert.... I understand your viewpoint, but I have to admit I'm halfway to agreeing with Phil. The vast majority of the, how shall I phrase it, ageing people visiting the garden centre as a 'day out' are physically capable of walking further than the distance from the bus to the cafeteria and, if they did so regularly, they'd be healthier and happier for doing so. I'm not going to force anyone to be active (although I might consider doing so if I could, nicely), but I'm damn well going to force myself to remain so until I literally lock up. My dad's diet and failure to exercise undoubtedly contributed to his rest, and my mother would be far healthier and more active now if she'd continued to be active when her arthritis began. Yes, I know it hurts. I've got a noticeably swollen arthritic joint in one foot, my hips ache ominously when I walk long distances, we've each got a duff knee, but dammit, we can still walk and we're going to Scotland later this year to do just that. Life is too valuable to spend it consuming nasty tea and cakes in a cheap restaurant if you can possibly do anything else.

regards sarah
