I don't think its unhealthy to tell the truth about religion. We wont get a successful multi ethnic society by pretending on the one hand that we respect Muslim or other religious law and on the other hand being seen to live our lives in a way that treats it with contempt, that way we appear immoral. We need to make it quite clear that we hold science and logic above mediaeval beliefs and its *we* who hold the high ground, especially in areas like women's rights. If they don't like it they can leave for a suitable backward country. Food laws are a minor part of this, but they belong in public health legislation organised by scientists, not some bigot in a church-mosque or whatever. What does the Koran say about bird flu I wonder? I understand a lot of the food laws are not even in the original documents, rather just got made up along the way?
I think over all it would be better if all food stood by names that show its source, cheddar should come from the Cheddar area. It wouldn't stop anybody making anything, just the names they apply. On the whole I think it would tend to push up standards.

I get the impression a lot think that farm animals would be left in fields to chase butterflies, naive is an appropriate word, I think. I think "compbuttion in world farming" are the people who take the sensible view of keeping animals for food but doing it in a humane way, something far from the minds of enthusiasts for religious food laws. -- Mike Reid
