Judith, I configured my newsreader to not show me any posts with certain homophobic words in the subject header, as well as many other inappropriate words or symbols for a food & drink group.
I suppose one might have a particularly carefree and joyous delicacy or wine, but "gay" doesn't fit a subject header here.... neither does anything with $ (spam) or even #.

When the idiots have gone home to roost or whatever they do I will reinstate "faggot" since I don't like to read homophobic posts either, but I don't mind reading about the traditional British meat product which is superb when properly made..... "Brain's" brand are a commercially produced travesty.
Once you have learned how to "killfile" as it is termed, Usenet becomes a much nicer place. Especially if you dare dip your toe into any of the dog NGs, as I have done since acquiring a new puppy, just to read. *shudder* ... not at the puppy (he's wonderful!).... but at one particular pile of poo who posts on them.
