Following up to Jane Gillett

the current thinking appears to be that everything should be bought from where it can be produced most cheaply, this seems to be driving manufacturing out of the country and leaving primary industries unable to compete with imports. Only tertiary industries seem to be thriving and they are not exempt from outsourcing where modern communications make it possible. I don't see any strong reason why "the city" which makes so much of our money, could not depart elsewhere almost overnight? It would seem more sensible to me to make use of our resources even if the cost is higher and protect our comfortable standards of living? The other side of the coin is the plight of the third world, who want to sell us their goods to raise their standards. The problem disappears if we get the whole world at the same standard of living, but that physically cant be the material standard of the US, or probably even Europe, so are we blindly embarked on a period of leveling down in the rich countries? When Margaret "no such thing as society" Thatcher said "there can be no fortress Europe" I thought, well, every else that you say is bollocks so perhaps that is too? -- Mike Reid
