The Beeb (along with parts of the government) seem to run a crusadejihad (pick your language-religion) against supermarkets.
Erm, where's the problem? What supermarkets have done is to push smaller shops into competing by being good, rather than having a captive market to whom they can sell crap with impunity. Nowadays the only people who can sell pure crap are those whose customers don't understand, or are intimidated by, the product (e.g. computers).
The farmer they had on the programme came across as a thoroughly ruthless and successful businesswoman, who had successfully opposed a supermarket opening in her area, and had a range of good local shops. But of course they are influenced by the standard set by supermarkets.
I've just eaten some WI produce. Specifically, a pudding made from fruit which I bought from their market stall. Yep, they coexist happily with three supermarkets, a market, and a bunch of smaller shops (some of them very highly reputed) in a modest-sized town.
You could find that where I used to live, in Italy1. But there they don't have the supermarket tradition and influence. So they can and do get away with selling very stale bread, nuts and grains full of weevils, etc, etc. And nowhere near the variety we take for granted here: just getting (for example) basic spices for a curry is very hard.
