I was never talking aboaut supermarket muffins. I don't like them and I don't buy them, although I have tasted them enough to know to what you're referring.

IIRC, Arri, you have lived in many places, mostly not in the US. I have lived in many places in the US, and a couple in the UK. Clearly we have different perspectives which is to be expected.

I am now 60, and have lived through enough decades to see many trends come and go. However, I have a substantial cookbook collection of well known American cookbooks that date back to 1937 and a few prior to that. I can butture you that a very wide variety of muffins-types are represented in all eras from at least that point forward. There are sweet, not so sweet, and savory. There are cakelike (which, I beg to differ, are *not* cupcakes), quickbread like, and coarse grainy types. There are those that are light as a feather and those that are heavy and substantial, and everything in between. There are those that have no embellishments or additions, and some that are laden with fruit and-or nuts, etc. In short, there is no one typical American muffin.

Cheers!
