On our way to Scotland we ate at that M6 Lake District Services, the one that's not owned by a chain... Tebay? The food was good, predictable but good. The drive back south was hell; traffic on the M6 was stationary, so we cut east to Leeds and south on the M1. We decided to stop c. 2030 and have something to eat and more importantly, some caffeine (given we had nearly 3 hours more to do). It was a standard services, and it was horrible. Not horrendously busy, but clearly had been busy all day -- almost every table in the eating areas was covered with empty plastic containers and full ashtrays. There were people, mostly families with screaming-exhausted children, plus groups-parties? of kids travelling to-from parties. Our hamburgers were compiled by people who could have been zombies or robots, and it would have been kinder if they were -- what a hell of a way to have to earn a pittance, arms covered with burn scars working the late shift. I'm not at all surprised the food was rubbish; those preparing it had, legitimately, no interest whatsoever in anything except getting out of there.
