In London most sandwiches from a chain would cost more than that. You can still get an egg and cress one for less than UKP 1.50 - though if you're at a motorway service station, petrol station shop or train station cafe, forget it!

Yesterday for lunch I had a duck 'wrap' and a little bottle of freshly squeezed orange juice from M&S on Tottenham Court Road - it cost about UKP 4.

Go somewhere that makes fresh sandwiches to order and the cost might even be higher. A sandwich on a plate in a central London pub could be twice that.

You're confusing GG as an archive and GG as a usenet agent. The former I find acceptable...

As for dining in a restaurant, as opposed to a cafe, you'd be looking at around £8, minimum, for two or possibly three, lunchtime courses.

Savoir Faire, Little Bay (OK - there's more than one of this), whatever's left of the Pierre Victoire chain, La Dolce Vita - and others run usually by Italian families spring to mind.

But note that places like these are usually located in areas where compebreastion is strong and gear their prix fixe menus to attract lunchtime custom. A la carte meals at the same places would cost much more.

I'm not sure what the situation is outside of London. I doubt it would be much cheaper, if you could find somewhere you'd care to eat in the first place. Sadly so many towns and villages have become so infested by franchises that they all look the same and the small independents have disappeared.
