Dunno. I'd have thought the terrible things were more likely to happen if the youngster never did; after all, surely children should get some idea of what they, or their counterparts, were going to grow up into.
The main problem that I can see is that the versions they do get to see are a very small subset and that people grow into a wide variety of shapes and sizes, all equally valid, and the people who don't match the popular "norm" are made to feel in some way imperfect or inadequate. A lot of psychological hangups could probably be solved if the general public were not so prudish. People are more than mere shape.

Not a lot IMV - apart from the intention. Those in "respectable" newspapers will be to increase sales so if you want to blame somebody, blame the people who buy those newspapers - the editors wouldn't do it if it didn't work. Presumably the same applies to lads' magazines, including naked breasts. I imagine the "babe walking down the road with a lot of cleavage showing or in a tight t shirt" simply either wants to be noticed or thinks she looks fashionable. And topless sunbathers usually just want to enjoy the sun, and maybe avoid white bits.
What is the big deal about nipples anyway? They're only little things after all. I still have the original two (thankfully) and I am not aware of them "jointly or separately", as the phrase goes, stopping the world turning yet, despite their having done their own bit of sunbathing from time to time.
