Following up to Jane Gillett

Greengrocers and butchers were sufficiently so to deter my wife when she started shopping, so she went to the new supermarkets, where you chose for yourself. Now we are happy to go back to the small shops because that atbreastude doesn't exist anymore and in any case we know what we are doing. But I wonder how confident beginners feel now about going in the butchers when they don't know one end of a carcbutt from the other?

Yes, wider is the right word. Now even "Wallace" wants his "Camem-bert". (I see he now has a "SMUG" fridge). I was demanding it and the small shops didnt answer the demand, I remember searching for an aubergine or an avocado or sometimes even a green pepper! Now of course there are "ethnic" grocers who have things I cant even recognise, brilliant.

although nowadays, market stall veg is IMHO better and cheaper than supermarkets.

my local butcher can tell me where the meat comes from (Orkney) loads of food miles! The drivers on his rest day today, he sets off tomorrow, half way is Aberdeen to his way of thinking! Still, there's no way London is going to function on local food or Orkney is going to show a profit selling just to Orcadians. -- Mike Reid
