Yes. Yes. I reckon it will; UK will become a country rather like, say, some of the S.American countries...

I know I'm butting in here and sorry but wanted to reply to two things in one go.

Yes, I do remember feeling like that when I was first married and lacked confidence. Now I've no problem with asking the butcher the best way to cook "that piece" or, alternatively, saying I want to make so-and-so so what is the best for that. If youngster learned a bit more about food they might have the confidence (I did virtually no cookery in school too - academics "didn't need it" - what rot!).

Well, they did try - Milk Marque - and the govt disbanded them. I gather it was because they were effectively a monopoly (in definition terms anyway) but I doubt if anything smaller would be strong enough to do any good; smkts are stronger than govts so it may not be worth it anyway.

As for other things, the plethora of regulations (often goldplated) which uk farmers have to meet and imports don't doesn't help. OTOH, the variou trade agreements make it almost impossible to have regulations (some of which are important) in the uk and implement the same control on imports. Equally unhelpful is the general framework which says that if the farmer makes a mistake the farmer suffers but if the government makes a mistake the farmer suffers.

I'll stop whinging.

No, probably not but surely there's no need to send it all over the country And I'm sure there is food produced closer than Orkney. As a matter of interest, there seems to be a fashion in local butchers putting notices up say what farms their current stocks of local meat come from.

Been my preference for some time.

At least it's in UK and the North at that (not sure where you are).

Cheers Jane
