Look forward to your article. Sounds as though you took the trouble to find out but I never doubted what you said on that topic. Will have a browse however..... It's...

I favour the apprenticeship approach; give people experience of real life applications alongside their "learning".

I'm afraid it's memories of conditions created by our empire which lead people to think that "Oh, I want so-and-so, I'll get some tomorrow". It has not occurred to them yet that tomorrow it might not be there or might be too expensive for them.

Hi Jane Wow what a comprehensive reply.........excellent stuff. I wrote an article for a magazine on this topic...

Exactly. And if they are succeeding economically better than we are (likely, new economies, less restrictions) then they will be able to outbid us. We are going to see a change, I'm sure. As we become less able to afford imports we will get less fussy about getting the variety of foods we now demand; people will be glad of what they can get (as in wartime).

So will that be a bad thing? Maybe not once we get used to a more restricted range of foods. It might be healthier and solve our obesity problem (not entirely tongue in cheek). But it would be safer if we maintained a food production industry which produced enough of our own staple foods and it is that supply which seems to be threatened ATM because so many farmers are finding it not worth while going on in the current situation. I know that the setaside regulations are meant to keep agricultural land in a state where they can be brought back into food production if needed in the future but that is not instant. Even if they are planted immediately a need is forseen, it still takes a long time before the harvest and we will have lost many of the skills and possibly the breeding stock.

Following up to Tom Anderson I'll apply for a nice job in the resulting beauracracy! I think the only way forward is for people to care the way Italians care, its going to...

Yes.

The cynical in me says the Ministry will find some reason for making that illegal if it isn't already. But, being serious, unless the small man has a significant private source I can't see that being enough to avoid shortages.

Understand but who else do you ask? These are all just the way I forsee things going; there must be somone who has the expertise to throw some light on it.

Cheers Jane
