We are slightly better in that with some animals we endeavour to make thier final seconds as painless as we can be bothered. But then again, that's a modern western value. AIUI Chinese are less sympathetic to an animal's suffering, for example, and there are plenty of people in the UK who take no interest in the feelings of animals.
Dignity - another human value. I don't reckon that bulls have a concept of dignity. But the bull doesn't look happy about what's going on (not as happy as being in a field of cows anyway) so why should we? But then where does it stop? Bear bating? Badger bating? Fox hunting? Whaling? Seal Culling? Game shooting? Fishing? Swatting a fly? Killing slugs? Walking on microbes in my garden?
