Don't have figures but qualitatively speaking: (a) We now have more people and population's till increasing. (b) "Third world countries" are starting to earn money on the world market and their people will be able to afford to buy food and will want to do that.

Which mountains are these? I can think of: (a) Private food thrown away; that will reduce when we get less money, as we almost certainly will, most of us. (b) Food thrown out by commercial organisations because it's past useby-sellby dates. What else?

Are you talking about the modern "Single Farm Payment"?

It's a pay for farmers to carry out environmental work viz payment for work just the same as payment for any other type of work. Many farmers have decided it's not worthwhile - too much hbuttle - just don't ask for payment and don't do any work you wouldn't have done anyway for your own purposes.

Perhaps you meant Setaside - did you? That was payment to keep land out of production so the govt paid the farmer to recompense him for profits lost; but the farmer had to keep the land in a state in which it could easily be brought back into production which means some work had to be done on it.
