On Wed, 06 Jul 2005 13:11:02 +0100, Jane Gillett I understand your response but I'd rather eat something that people have ben eating for generations Like opium and coca leaves? Lead as a sweetener in cider and wine? Cannabis leaves? I can probably dig up many more.

Sorry to follow up my own post, but I have thought of two biggys, still On Topic here.

Bertorelli's Soho aimed mainly at Mike Reid or congokid
Sorry, June, I've only just noticed this thread (now that all the background noise seems to have pbutted). I've not yet been to Bertorelli's in Soho...

For generations-millennia the UK population drank water out of shallow ground water wells, there are still two within yards of my afternoon walk. These regularly got contaminated with sewage which caused regular outbreaks of cholera and other diseases, which end *millions* Contaminated water still kills *millions* each year in the third world. BTW I had dysentery, early 1960s in Aden, *not nice at all*, without antibiotics and RAF nursing care it could well have end me.

If you want to go back to a time of earth closets, water from wells and hand pumps count me out. BTW I can just remember c1939 an earth closet, and the first tap which had been installed in my grandmother's house, and seeing a shallow ground water pump in use.

I can remember water pipes made of lead, in WWII, which caused neurological damage to generations of children. If you want to go back to lead pipes count me out.
