you are confusing two families of crustaceans: The prawn family is distinct from shrimp family (at least in countries outside of the US) . In the UK, if you ask for shrimp, you are most likely to get shrimp, not prawns, especially around here (on the shores of Morecambe Bay). Potted shrimp is potted shrimp, NOT potted prawns, they are different, I would pot prawns. This may have been your problem. Prawns are sold according to size, the smaller the number, the larger the prawn, and where prawns larger than size 10 are as big as one's fist, as I experienced in a Chinese supermarket in Manchester.
So, even though you are, or have been, a 'prawn virgin', you still have to lose your 'shrimp' cherry ;?) Potted shrimp are served on toast only.
Try to find uncooked prawns (they are blue) and cook quickly in oil-ghee, just until they turn pink-red, do not overcook them. good hunting wazza
