My experience is that some farmed salmon is in short supply. I smoke salmon for a living and one of our two main suppliers has recently been unable to supply us with required amounts because they don't have enough to meet demand. At the same time their prices have risen about 25% in the last 4 months or so.

They argue that the price of farmed Scottish salmon has been at an unsustainably low level for a long time and it is now rising to 'reasonable' levels.

Some of this is related to Norwegian farmed salmon. Norway was apparently dumping a lot of much cheaper farmed salmon on the UK market, causing Scottish farmers to drop their prices in order to compete. I think I am right in saying that quotas have now been put in place to prevent Norway from selling too much cheap salmon into the UK market.

Furthermore, Pan Fish are in talks about taking over Marine Harvest which may drive prices higher as they (Pan Fish) will control something like 25% of the world's salmon farms.

Not entirely sure how this relates to Asda or Tesco but a couple of months back we got a fax from one of our suppliers warning of prices hikes and fish shortages. The following week I was in Tesco and noticed that they had nearly all fresh salmon on special offer.....
