Oh! I am going back 40 years. Before your WD time, as it were. I would like to think so but doubt it. Leave WH and walk alongside the lake. (You can only walk on one side, as you know). Keep going along the road for ages and there is a house. That is it. I buttume it is still there. The area was always sparsely populated. IIRC, and it was pushing 50 years ago, it was the ghost of a woman. It looked a bit of a spooky house and at that time there weren't as many visitors as there are today, so any stories told to a bunch of kids were rather scary. I haven't been for around 9 years, when I took sprog and daughter on the Ratty and down to Boot, which was the nearest we got.
There was also supposed to be a ghost at our school, part of which used to be the Howgill Hospital in Whitehaven. On of my schoolfriends was supposed to see it but whether she did or not is a matter for conjecture. She is now sadly deceased, so I can't ask her whether or not she made it up. Last time I visited, it had been demolished. -- June Hughes
