I don't believe in portents, but when the bed collapsed soon after arrival I did wonder if all would go smoothly, but the nice polish man fixed it even if he didnt speak English, I wonder what the Cornish repair man is doing now? We don't care about the Cornish waitresses of course, because the new polish ones are prettier, even if they don't know how to serve plates yet.
comfort foodsOn Wed, 19 Apr 2006, Oxymel of Squill For me, comfort food has to be easy to prepare, so it's usually a large kebab! If i was cooking, it'd probably be...
Springer Spaniel (Treberley, Launceston) Its in a lot of guide books so we thought we would detour, nothing special. More interesting was a long chat with a farmer while his cattle used the lane (we take less than obvious routes at Easter) given up on milk as no profit, we all wondered what the countryside will be like if we decide to import all our food?
Fountain Inn (Newbridge, above Penzance) Turned round by new landlord, good beer, good hearty food, friendly welcome, please use it (there's a bus from Penzance).
The Ship, (Mousehole) The ship was my favourite pub once, when it was dark and full of growling Cornishman talking of fish and boats in unintelligible accents, now the cottages mostly belong to braying over confident types from the home counties, I wonder if their confidence will stretch to manning the lifeboat when its needed one winter night? The old landlord went down in the Penlee disaster, Carol remembers him showing her round the cellar back in the sixties. Now they have knocked down a wall to make it brighter, but at least the beer is back on track and the food acceptable, even if you are offered baguettes instead of pasties.

Ham againHi Tom, I often do a bacon joint like this, have done for years. I soak overnight (experience has taught me that sometimes they are nastily salty, even if...
The Lobster Pot RIP Closed for several years its now apartments for second homers, overlooking the harbour, perfect for fishermen, but which ones have the odd quarter million+? I hear the Council wants more punitive council tax on those who don't contribute to the community by leaving cottages empty except the few weeks they fancy being there, no doubt they will whine about that as much as when the local services close? Or perhaps they don't even notice? The Lamorna Wink Replaced the Ship as my favourite pub, hadn't been for a couple of years, it all looked the same, festooned with relics of a life in the Navy, except I notice there is now a photo of the landlord, smiling over a pint. "poo" I think and sadly I'm right. There's portents for you, boy. -- Mike Reid
