I went today (Saturday). Boy was it hot - and such a fab day out that I'm hoping to go again tomorrow with some friends!
I bought a premium ticket and started at Wiltons where I had a couple of freshly shucked oysters dressed with their lovely onion sauce. They didn't ask for my 'crowns' so I scarpered to the next stall - result!
I then sampled some wines and other fancy stuff including toffee vodka (yuck) from various stalls, signed up for everything that was going and entered lots of compebreastions. My spam trap's going to be busy over the coming months.
After that I made my way to the Starbucks seating area opposite Zaika, and tried food from some of the restaurant stands there, including:
- seared scallop with crispy aubergine, mint and salade d'agricole from Atlantic - seared Keltic scallop, summer pea and mint puree with pea shoot cress from Novelli - mini arancini - Sicilian deep fried rice balls - from Carluccio's - Slow roast pork belly in a bun with buttered potato & homemade apple sauce, and glazed lemon tart from Rhodes Twenty Four - free water from here as well - Imperial garlic prawns from Imperial City (which I understand is linked with Ken Hom) - the sales rep on the South African wine stand nearby recommended them with her Vergelegen Sauvignon Blanc. Though the wine was excellent I thought the prawns, which came in a light tempura batter, were a bit overcooked - a glbutt of lager at the Fullers bar - joue de boeuf braisZe a l'ancienne et gratin dauphinois (braised beef in rich red wine sauce and creamed potatoes, according to the English translation on the menu) from Le Gavroche - the meat was beautiful and slow cooked to perfection, the potatoes were definitely dauphinois - tiramisu from Refettorio - a couple of rum based drinks at The Sagatiba Bar while we relaxed and watched dazzling bottle flinging displays by a couple of the bartenders.
I didn't always have the correct number of crowns, but the people who served me didn't seem too bothered if I was one or two short.
Low point of the day was the zombie in the American Express bank where I bought extra crowns. Not a good advert for them at all.
But apart from that - an excellent afternoon out. And I'm looking forward to doing it all again tomorrow!
