This was sooo interesting! In parts reminded me of Russia, where, in villages women had no time to grow plants (edible), beacuse they spentso much time on buses, going to the nearest town to get fresh produce , including fruit + veg...that was in the past (the 70s?) and is probably still practiced ...probably around the world too.....
When we lived in Nigeria all fruit-veg was locally grown - it seems to be enough to spread your would-be compost a bit and things would grow, but apples for example....thery were on sale, especially on the beach - you walked on the beach till you saw French sticks, French wine and La vache qui rie :P) or you saw those things walked past you on big trays on heads, a bag of 4 golden delicious were 4 naira which was equivalent to ü4 (that was 25 years ago)...for some things you could pay a lot if you missed them enough :)
not to mention one business visitor who was coming over just before Christmas - all UK expats staying there for Christmas begged for some brussel sprouts (you could get just about everything else for Christmas dinner...). So the poor bloke has a briefcase with documents, a shirt, pants and socks...and a small suitcase with brussel sprouts....on the way from the airport the car was stopped by robbers...they left the briefcase, nicked the suitcase :PPPPPP
