Life was a lot simpler, we lived in the village about three and half-four miles from town and that was a days outing. School holidays was spent up in Ryton greenside which to us youngsters was a life time away as we set off very early in the morning stopping at Kerby lonsdale for lunch between 12 - 1 pm arriving at my aunts house very late in the evening.
This in a sense answers the question; local greengrocer stocked what every one needed as the population was-is not as dense as it is to day same as to days supermarkets, if you needed any thing out of the ordinary the they would get it in for you on his next delivery. Supermarkets cannot-will not do this for you as it is not cost effective for them as you might be the only one that has requested this item. Items that sit on a shelf for a given length of time with a slow turn over are not cost effective for them to stock.
