I wanted to drive the Alcan highway (to Alaska), back in the days when it was gravel and an adventure. That won't happen either -- they paved a lot of the road to make it safe for Winnebuggers :-((
I wouldn't wear overtrousers, too reminiscent of snowgear; I prefer to take them on-off more easily while walking. We've got gear from an array of manufacturers. My jacket is Mountain Hard Wear, rainpants, ok, trousers and tights are something else, we've got Rab lightweight jackets (but I don't like Pertex on a hill, it's too vulnerable to damage), Buffalo trousers, and so forth. Might have to get him a pair of custom-made rainpants; at 6'4" even the large are too short. He needs a different jacket (he's walking hot these days and the current one lacks sufficient ventilation) but not being a gear-head he's reluctant to buy a new one before the old one dies. I pointed out somewhat forcibly that delaying putting his jacket on in bad weather (because he gets too hot) is bloody stupid.
ObDrink: I've just bought my first hydration bag thingy because my new daypack (Osprey! at last one that fits) takes it. Now that will be interesting.
