Oxymel of Squill
Here is an Italian recipe:
Disponete via via sul piatto di servizio scaldato togliendo i fili, cospargeteli di sale finissimo e guarnite con ciuffi di prezzemolo fritto.- Take the crusts off slices of plain old white bread, the storebought kind. Cut slices of mozzarella a little smaller than the bread. Put the slices of mozzarella on a slice of bread, then top with another slice of bread. It says to tie it with thread in a cross. Never heard that before. Beat two eggs and pour them over these constructions, making sure it is well absorbed. Heat olive oil in a pan and put these things in 2 or 3 at a time, browning well on both sides. Put them on a plate, sprinkle lightly with very fine salt and decorate with a spring of fried parsley.
Here is an American recipe, but from a famous Italian chef. It is quite different, because the egg is mixed with milk, thus making something more like a croque monsieur. It also has thyme in it.
