I was under the impression that frosen contains more nutrients than fresh as long of course, as the frozen hasn't been in the freezer for several years. Do you know of any data where one could compare the merits of frozen veg as compared to fresh? My other choices are Tesco, Safeway and co-op. Nothing exciting to be found in any of them and to be honest the items on the shelves of all of them are practically identical. But at what cost to local independant retailers and the environment?

But I prefer to buy Portugese, German, Italian and Polish food. Shopping at the supermarket will not allow me to do this. Also it would compromise my beliefs about environmental, ethical and other issues. Supermarket shopping is not real shopping, it is simply selecting from a range of items chosen not by the consumer, but by the retailer. We will end up like America. Every single town looks the same, has the same malls, the same chain stores, food outlets etc. Choice has been removed from the American people and it is going that way in this country too. Thank goodness there are some towns and consumers resisting the stranglehold of global commerce and insisting on independance. I *like* the fact that I can travel from the east coast, to the West or North and in each place, visit different shops and buy different local delicacies. Who the heck would want to visit the Shetland islands, or Penzance, or Cromer and be limited to what tesco sells? Buying strawberries, imported from America, in the middle of the British strawberry season is a perfect example of utter madness.
