Maybe we should try to find an elegant synonym for "cheddered" or "cheddering process".

Yes. Please. I wish. Got involved in this discussion not so long ago on a farming newsgroup. Apparently there are trade agreements - WTO, EU - which effectively prevent labels saying that the animal has-has-not been raised under the UK-type welfare-health conditions; major trade repercussions and threat of taking to international court etc if UK does that. And developing countries would take a bad hit if we demanded that they produce to our standards. So, as a result, there have to be other ways of informing the buying public. TV is an obvious way but you have to persuade the TV companies. And there would probably be a backlash about showing "such things" on television. A powerful way, though, if it could be done properly.

There's not much wish to understand among the native UK communities buying public either.

Cheers Jane
