I got this from the Compbuttion in World Farming site. If these are the new improved conditions what was it like before? It was certainty enough to stop me eating veal.

Hi everyone! This one has me posting, even though I have a mountain of work to catch up...

A 1997 EU Directive laid down minimum standards for the protection of calves. This has required of all Member States the following:

As of 1 January 1998:

¬ Calf feed must contain sufficient iron to ensure average blood haemoglobin level of at least 4.5 mmol of haemoglobin per litre of blood.

¬ Calves over 2 weeks old must be provided with a daily minimum of 50g of fibrous food.

¬ Calves from 8 to 20 weeks old must be provided with 250g of fibrous food daily.

anon Speaking as someone wot knows, code checking is a bit of a nightmare. You'd think that it would all be computerised but it's not - someone goes...

¬ Crates for calves must be large enough to allow the calf to lie down, rest, stand up and groom itself without difficulty.

¬ In hot weather or when injured, calves must have water at all times.

As of 1 January 2007:

¬ The narrow veal crate becomes illegal. Calves are not to be kept in individual stalls or pens after 8 weeks of age. When calves are individually kept, they must have room to turn around.

Noises off
