They will go to wherever is seen as best for them. The reasons are not always financial, although probably most often are. The fact that SWP has suffered a loss of form is irrelevant and I doubt if any player like him goes to a club with only cash in mind or with any thought of spending years on the bench. He seemed a confident kid and probably saw a fast championship medal would come with the cash and a frequent first team place.

Fact is that any player joining any of the top sides in any country knows that the price he pays is uncertainty about a regular place, but the money and potential honours compensate.

All sides make good and also poor or overpriced buys. You seem to suggest that if a player is a success and did not cost TOO much he is not a mercenary regardless of what his motives to join were?

All players do what they see as best for them. They are all mercenaries or very few are. Maybe their motives are the same as the rest of us? Why the hell do stupid football fans think they are, or should be, any different? Of course the answer is they live in a strange world of their own with it unique sense of what is right and wrong.

SWP is no more a mercenary than any kid who learns a skill at a firm and moves on to a better paid job with greater prospects at a more successful company.
