i'd be interested to know just how much truth there is in this. how on earth do cyclists take part in stage races that last weeks and ride stages that last up to 6-7 hours a day? yes we know some of them dabble with performance enhancing drugs but the vast majority do not, maybe that is about conditioning and years of putting long miles in day after day, maybe it's wrong to compare an endurance sport with football.
i raced as an amateur cyclists for several years and yes there is such a thing as fatigue, i remember packing in a criterium alongside chris boardman who complained of fatigue and certainly looked it.
i find it a bit difficult to believe that a very fit sportsman could not compete in two games 48 hours apart and maintain a high level of performance. OK, in the context of LFC this season there has been an unusually high number of fixtures however if you are extremely fit, recovery is vastly aided by your fitness added to which the facilities available to these footballers to aid recovery.
so i have to ask just how much is benitez exaggerating? or not as the case may be. any physios-sports fitness experts put there care to comment.
also i should add that for a very fit young athlete steven gerrard looks knackered "around the eyes" if you know what i mean.
