RAFA BENITEZ today paid tribute to the courage of Momo Sissoko, claiming the youngster's amazing comeback underlined why he's destined to become one of the game's great midfielders.

Sissoko made an outstanding return to the first team in midweek, easing his way through the 7-0 thrashing of Birmingham.

Benitez revealed how the Liverpool bench were concerned when Sissoko's protective glbuttes steamed up during the first half.

But Sissoko was determined to play on without them, eventually completing a full 90 minutes.

"What pleased me most about Tuesday's game wasn't just the victory or the goals, it was to see Momo Sissoko playing again," said Benitez.

"He was training all week with the special glbuttes, but during the game they began steaming up so he had more problems.

He decided to take them off but wanted to continue playing.

"This shows how much courage the boy has. There was an element of risk in him playing without the glbuttes, but he has a strong character and he is a winner.

"For sure he can become one of the best midfielders around because he is so good mentally and in terms of ability.

"Look at his performance on Tuesday. There were times when he was determined to make key tackles and he's always working for the whole game."

Benitez says Sissoko's swift return was a major factor in the emphatic nature of Liverpool's win, as his presence brings the best out of those around him.

He's now mulling over keeping Sissoko in the side for the Mersey-side derby, or to recall the more experienced Didi Hamann.

"When we have Momo, Xabi and Gerrard available, we have the right balance of skill and energy, pace and power and they bring the best qualities out of each other," said Benitez.

"Sometimes you may need to change things around, but when they're on the pitch together we have everything you need in a mid-field."

Djimi Traore will today discover the extent of the knee injury he suffered at St Andrews. Traore under-went a scan yesterday and fears ligament damage.
