Paul Eaton 14 September 2005 Jamie Carragher today insisted he hasn't thrown the towel in on Liverpool's title challenge this season - as he hit back at the London press for stitching him up after the 0-0 draw with Spurs. Carragher spoke to a couple of London journalists after the match at White Hart Lane and explained to them that, in view of Chelsea's millions, it would be difficult for the Reds to win the Premiership this year.

He was then angered by headlines on Monday morning quoting him as saying Liverpool have given up on the title and that the towel has been thrown in after just three games of the season.

The Liverpool defender is keen to set the record straight and today told Liverpoolfc.tv: "We are Liverpool Football Club, the most successful side in the country in terms of winning the league and that's always our aim at the start of the season.

"I spoke to a couple of journalists who I didn't know in London after the game at Spurs and they stitched me up. Maybe that's a lesson learned from my point of view and I should talk only to club media and the local press from now on because I know them well.

"They put it to me that the result at Tottenham was disappointing if we wanted to win the title and I replied saying it was a good result considering a lot of our players had been away on international duty. Then they compared it to Chelsea winning there after an international break and I said that was different because of Chelsea's financial muscle.

"I did say it would be difficult for us to win the league this season but not impossible. I said the same thing about the Champions League last season.

"No-one here is throwing the towel in or giving the title away to Chelsea, Manchester United or Arsenal. It would be a strange time to throw the towel in when we play these teams over the next few weeks. These are going to be games which will define where we're going to go in the league this season.

"We are the European Champions. We haven't won the league in a long time and so if you win the European Cup the next aim has to be winning your domestic league. That's what we'll try to do this season."
