Carra: Morientes can beat Blues Liverpool, Friday February 25 2005

Fernando Morientes has been backed to destroy Chelsea once again in Sunday's Carling Cup final.

The Spanish striker scored goals in both legs of Monaco's Champions League semi-final victory last season and will face the Blues again in Liverpool colours at the Millenniun Stadium.

The Reds will undoubtedly start the game as underdogs, but Jamie Carragher believes that in Morientes and Chelsea target Steven Gerrard they have two potential match-winners.

"Big games bring out the best in big players and we've got plenty of them, particularly with Fernando Morientes and Steven Gerrard," he told the Liverpool Echo.

"Psychologically, I think Morientes will really be looking forward to facing Chelsea again and they might be a bit worried after what he did against them in the Champions League last season.

"He was outstanding in both legs of the semi-final when he scored some great goals. He'll be very confident of doing it again.

"For obvious reasons, we all know how desperate Stevie will be to lift the cup. He's someone else who can be a match winner on the day and he'll be doing everything to help us beat them."

Carragher remembers the Carling Cup final of two years ago when critics gave them little chance of beating Manchester United.

"We're slight underdogs going into this fixture, but it's a similar situation to the one we went into last time when we faced Manchester United," said Carragher.

"United were going for the title and we ended up finishing fifth, but our performance showed if you play to your potential on the day, it doesn't matter who you're playing."
