Gearing Up For The New Season
By The Chelsea Advocate
Man Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool fans and the press in this country that panders to them might just have stopped and regained their normal complexions after a nasty affliction which previously saw them turn green.
No surprise though, it's that time of year again to start being nice to your bank manager, get ready to drain the alcohol supply around Stamford Bridge and boozers up and down the country, get ready to repeatedly type "cheap flights" into your internet search engine at work, the new season is nearly upon us. Destiny and greatness await the current Champions of England.
A heck of a lot has gone on since the local shops ran out of Champagne on May 10th in order to ensure that everything is ready for one of the most important seasons in the history of the club. Where to start though?
Probably the best place to start is with the Special One, not content with becoming a Stamford Bridge legend in nearly Zola-Esque time, Josˇ then proceeded to earn himself a million extra bonus points by exposing the truth about the scandalous link between David Dein and the FA. I've lost count of the amount of times this blatant injustice has been highlighted, but at least now Jose's said it it'll generate some column inches. That in turn, might just help a myopic and incompetent FA to do something about the anomaly of a Chief Executive of one of the most powerful clubs in the country sitting on its board in an Executive capacity. That said I wouldn't hold your breath.
In other news, we continue to be held to ransom by yet another member of football's biggest disgraces: the G14 group. President Aulas' stubbornness in refusing to sell his best player for less than £30m is admirable; after all, here is a man who is fighting for the interests of his club. What is not so admirable is the rumour that he is refusing to sell to Chelsea because of his perceptions of us as Club without... (just ask a Scouser for the rest). Really we shouldn't expect anything less from a member of football's most childish, arrogant and selfish organisation. It seems even Kenyon (given his recent comments) now realises the depth of their bitterness towards and resentment at the fact that we want to compete with and overpower them all as top dogs.
Nevertheless, Aulas must surely be running out of time. It really is quite simple, sell him to us now for the appropriate price we are offering, or risk losing him for a pittance after a season when he pulls miserable faces and acts with a general prima donna attitude. Either way life will go on at Chelsea with or without Mikel Essien. Though he is undoubtedly a fine player, we cannot allow ourselves to be ripped off any longer by clubs who see us as a meal ticket. It is also high time, if he really wants to leave, that Essien made things easier for himself by not worrying about his cut and handing Lyon a transfer request.
Of course Essien wouldn't be the first midfielder to be stuck in a quandary over a move to us. Steven (I love the club and the supporters but throw a strop and want to leave at the end of every season) Gerrard turned us down to stay at Liverpool. Fair enough, but what will be interesting will be looking up and down the Kop at the new Gerrard shirts that'll be on display after the angry Kop-ites burnt their previous ones and hung them on the Shankly Gates.
No doubt the offer of £100,000 a week (more than JT and Lampard's respective wages I understand) convinced him just where his "heart and soul" was.
Back to our own club and of course our own supporters. After some solid achievements last year, The Chelsea Supporters Group continue to go from strength to strength. There is now strong evidence that the Matthew Harding End is being shorn of advertising hoardings to allow us to drape banners over the Upper tier. So there should be no excuses. Pay a visit to www.barmyflags.co.uk (who have already done a huge array of banner for Chelsea supporters in the past) and make your contribution to that area of the Stamford Bridge. More of that later though. It also appears that kids will gain concessions for the "Chelsea specials" for away games which is another welcome development.
The group continues to go strong on other projects on behalf of all Chelsea supporters, become a member make sure you get involved and play your part in directing the group to achieve what you want as a Chelsea supporter. A website is in the process of construction but if anyone wants more information contact the group at; chelseasupportersgroup.co.uk uk
RAFA: JOSE MUST BE WORRIEDRafael Benitez today claimed Jose Mourinho's latest rant over Steven Gerrard's decision to stay with the Reds is a sign that the Chelsea manager is worried about Liverpool's...
That all said, this season is critical for so many reasons. Retaining the title would be a mbuttive step in the development of the club towards the goal of true greatness that this club has been striving for 100 years. It is going to be phenomenally difficult though. Teams are not going to roll over for us and we can be sure of some fireworks on the way. As supporters we need to be patient and together in support of the team and as ever we're going to have to give the team our best possible backing as there are going to be some difficult times and periods ahead. Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool aren't happy about what they consider to be their birthright being snatched away from them, and are almost certainly going to come back at us with renewed vigour (but hopefully not dodgy linesmen). From Cardiff to hopefully Paris via Stamford Bridge and Wembley it's going to be a mbuttive season for us.
