Crying out for touch of clbutt

Sep 19 2005

View from the stands by Andy Proudfoot Liverpool supporter

WHAT TO make of this game? Evidence of Liverpool's increasing maturity, in that they refused to be drawn into trading punches with a team whose greater attacking resources would probably have produced defeat?

Or signs that, despite winning the Champions League not four months ago, we're still not confident enough to take on one of our major rivals on our own terms?

Either way this cagey affair at least showed that we're worthy of respect, United clearly opting for a more cautious approach than usual. Unfortunately, with Gerrard and Alonso sitting deep, particularly in the first half, and with Liverpool largely dependant on long balls to Crouch, what resulted was a disappointing game that, while not lacking pbuttion, produced few goalmouth incidents.

United edged the first half, their work-rate high and their fluidity of movement impressive. Liverpool gave the ball away far too much, with Garcia once again the main culprit. If possession really is nine-10ths of the law, Garcia needs to hire a top-clbutt barrister. The continued excellence of our defence, however, restricted United to just a couple of chances, Hyypia's mastery of van Nistelrooy supporting Jamie Carragher's dominance of everything else that moved.

We showed more attacking intent in the second half, with Gerrard pushing forward more, but once again the only threat to the opposition goal was from the boot or head of the skipper.

Despite the rebutturing words of the manager, the lack of threat from our strikers is a continuing cause of concern. Crouch is coming on nicely, but Cisse will need to learn that standing looking astonished at the referee for not awarding a penalty while the ball remains in play a few yards away is not really what we're looking for in a striker.

If only there'd been a world-clbutt striker available who really wanted to play for Liverpool.
