Because the couple do not deliberately *prevent* the creation of human life. Abstinence is irrelevant because love doesn't happen; contraception is relevant because love happens, and one or both parties, availing of man-made barriers to conception, appropriate unto themselve the right to determine whether a human life should be brought into the world. Artificial contraception is also an impediment to the unitive aspect of love, which God, if we are to believe Genesis, intended for the psychological wellbeing of men and women, quite apart from its procreative aspect.
God is to time and events in time what the ocean is to a current running through it -- present to but not part of its beginning, middle and end; able to slip in and out of time; and subject to change only in the sense that the whole moves as one, a huge and undifferentiated body of water, while the current cannot move without changing itself and differentiating itself forever from what it once was. The ocean moves but remains one.
