You seem to be under the delusion that you can defend organized religion as not being evil by indicating, at least in your mind, the presence of other evils. Painting two dark colors on the wall does not make one them light because the other is dark.
I would blame most of it on Catholics, because I was raised Catholic and I've studied both clbuttical history, the early, late, middle, 'renaissance', and the reformation. The arrogantly titled 'catholic' church is responsible for more misery than any other organized body secular or ecclesiastical that I can imagine.
