The Italian media have condemned the behaviour of a section of the Juventus support at Anfield on Tuesday night who snubbed a tribute to those who died in the Heysel Stadium disaster.

Liverpool, whose fans were involved in rioting with Juve supporters before the European Cup final in Brussels in 1985, held a minute's silence before the Champions League quarter-final while home fans held a banner aloft with the message "in memory and friendship".

Thirty-nine people died at Heysel, the majority of which were Italian.

However, the Juve fans in the first 10 rows of the visitors section turned their backs on the tribute and also whistled during the minute's silence.

Italy's press were not impressed, with Turin-based La Stampa claiming: "At the festival of friendship, ignorance wins.

"The tribute of Liverpool to the Juventus fans became a diplomatic incident, an enormous embarrbuttment and in practice, a disgrace.

"To the applause of the opposing fans they turned their backs and raised their middle finger. The enormous difference was there to see."

Gazzetta dello Sport was equally critical, adding: "It was an embrace that died against a wall of indifference, which was unfortunately coloured black and white.

"A numerous part of the 2,000 supporters from Italy, in the section behind the goal, did not join in the spirit or the behaviour."
