You could be right. I am not the best judge in the world so I do not dispute that the group were gifted and touched a chord with the public, and they certainly were different. My comments were about the image of Lennon as an Icon and this went beyond the music output. He set himself up as a guru. He encouraged the media and issued trite nonsense as if it were divine insight.
He liked to promote himself as a philosopher but then produced those poor lyrics to 'Imagine' with terrible poetry and its childish sentimental ramblings.

I have my doubts about the longevity of the Beatles popularity. It comes from no particular preference of my own but just from a 10 year buttociation with one of the countries best known musical theatre schools which turns out the kids who appear in the West End musicals....if they are lucky. They are all, obviously, into the modern groups and stars, but from the past which would you think they value most? The Beatles hardly get a mention. but high on the list, along with the older American masters like Cole Porter, Gershwin etc is believe it or not.....ABBA. I was as surprised as you might be, but seems that we have a new generation who prefer catchy melody and are not affected by the hype the Beatles enjoyed. Time will tell.
