All true, and I was a contemporary , and he did bring the City fame and he was a peaceful man. But he was also a misguided fool who got carried away with his own ego, not the only Beetle to suffer from the same.

Also true that he was, and is still, admired by many, but this is more a reflection on those who admire, because it reminds them of their own youth, or the youth of their parents. It pbuttes with time. It proves only that we are not very discriminating when choosing our icons.

The world is full of people who can inspire, people deserving our admiration. Most are not famous, but some are. Few are to be found in the fields of popular entertainment, but that seems to be the only place we look.

Last week a drunk died. A man who abused women, did not care if he was a danger on the roads. A man who would not accept help. A poor man no doubt, but a waste of everyone's time, But thousands turned out, or stood to applaud him, because he once played a good game of football.

Look in the obituary pages of the Times or Independent and see how many amazing people have died over the same period, unnoticed, because they worked in areas more useful than entertainment

Lescor I don't think I was looking to the "field of popular entertainment" for inspiration or leadership or any of...

Maybe it is time we all grew up?
