I don't think I was looking to the "field of popular entertainment" for inspiration or leadership or any of the other values we seek in our icons. That he (and the other three) inspired me seemed a chance thing and it took me on a journey from sheer excitement at the music (at the age of 9) to a broad and inquisitive interest in the world - and to a position where I didn't simply believe what I was told *just because it came from a figure of authority*.
However, in essence, I agree with you.
This man (who I did feel sorry for) was a better example of "the wrong kind of choice" for an icon. I saw a talented entertainer who could not handle the lifestyle that was thrown before him, who did not choose to become an idol, and who had a drink problem that he acknowledged (and perhaps he was simply too weak to defeat it). Those who knew him said he was at heart a good man whose weaknesses were paraded in public while the likes of you and me and Joe Public can hide in anonymity.

Indeed, it's a reflection on these times we live in that *celebrity* is valued more highly than just about anything else. Sad but true. Also sad, we'll probably never *all* grow up.
The MistakeBecause United are still ahead of LFC, exactly where we've been for 15 years now. Twice, against many more times of them finishing behind us...
However, many thanks for a well written and intelligent contribution to the debate, sadly uncommon in this group.
