Actually head to head results against the best teams are a much better indication of a teams true level. A 38 game league is an indication of the strength in depth of your actual squad.
Liverpool have a weaker squad than several other premiership clubs but obviously in a year of transition it is tough to judge how good the squad is for the following year ahead of time.
If it had been a league then Liverpool would of taken 15 points from 21(granted AC would of been a draw) against some of the best teams in europe.

Another take would be to say there was never more than 1 goal between victory or defeat against Chelsea in 5 games last season - if Liverpool are supposedly so poor then how come the narrow margin of victory-defeat?
No more than a goal in the defeats to MU - again if we are so poor why?

Amazingly if one looks at the results it becomes apparent that Liverpool had problems coping with both the league and champions league. Liverpool took 10 points from 39 after champions league matches. If you look at the game 2 games after a champions league match you will find a mbuttive, huge difference in results, 10 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss from 12 games (including a win on penalties so you could say 9 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss).
