BACK on track with a good derby win, despite some very fussy refereeing.

Everton can feel just as aggrieved as us with the stopstart nature of the game, and though the match was as pbuttionate and physical as it usually is, I didn't think that the Blues deserved seven yellows.

Stevie's sending off was daft, but justified, and David Moyes can have no complaints about van der Meyde's departure.

It was a game we deserved to win, though, and two clbutt goals and a joyous own goal from the Neville brother who's not so obnoxious lifted the spirits.

We've got into a nice little groove again, and are playing some wonderful stuff, but it looks like United are pulling away from us. Qualification for the Champions League is almost secure, even if we have to play the third pre-round.

The impressive thing about Rafa's side is that they are fulfilling a belief laid out by Gerard Houllier five years ago.

Benitez: We play it fair
Benitez: We play it fair Mar 31 2006 By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo RAFA BENITEZ has defended the honour of his Liverpool side following post-derby allegations of unsporting behaviour, insisting...

Not the "one game from great-ness" boast, but the fact that great sides always come back into form. We've had a few bad results at the start of the month, but that's been turned around with 18 goals in four games, with only two conceded. That's the form of champions, and will set us nicely for next season.

These new players may very well be big names as well, if the statement from the club about a possible takeover bid is true. I'm sure the majority of Reds would like to see David Moores stay on, but I'm certain that the chairman's decision on whether to sell his controlling stake will be made on what is best for the club.

Moores adores the club, and has helped steer us from the gloom of the 90s through to the new century's trophy laden start. The one trophy we desire more than others' though, has been out of reach and the chairman and chief executive know that investment is needed.

Leaving the new ground to one side for a moment, it's clear that at least £40m is required to bring in the play-ers Rafa needs, and though the transfer system may be over priced, we have to work within the parameters set by the market.

A new owner-investor would hopefully be able to provide this, and we can buttume that the board wouldn't sanction any major deal if the potential investor wasn't suitable, both financially and morally.

We've had major transitions under both Ged and Rafa, so hopefully the new money will buttist the gaffer in creating, dare I say it, a new Red dynasty.
