FORMER Liverpool midfielder Steve McMahon says coaching Perth Glory in the new Australia A-League will be like playing a European Cup tie every other weekend.

The three-hour time zone difference between east and west Australia - and the six hours' difference with New Zealand --means Perth will be accumulating plenty of air miles in the inaugural A-League season.

"The players are keen to learn about the European professional way of life and I can do that for them," McMahon, 43, said.

Glory were already a success before the arrival of the former England player - capped 17 times - earlier this year.

He believes, with the signing of players with European experience, such as Brian Deane, goalkeeper Jason Petkovic and former Nottingham Forest apprentice David Tarker, that success can continue under him.

"Some critics have questioned my signing of Brian but he has good presence, is big and strong and still fit for a player of 37," said McMahon.

The former Leeds United and Sunderland striker will join the squad in early August.

While the football is going to be a challenge, McMahon loves the lifestyle Down Under.

"Perth is a fantastic place to live - the climate is wonderful," he said.
