If this is correct, then Benitez is a better manager than I gave him credit for. Morientes simply cannot hack the premiership.
I know you probably don't want to hear this, but here's my view. Morientes needs to be playing in a league that has obvious gulfs in clbutt between top and bottom of the league. France and Spain are exactly like this IMHO. Because the premiership has a "top three" and a "the rest" sort of feel to it at the moment, then Morientes cannot get rolling. He needs to regularly score goals to give his game momentum. He cannot do that unless he's playing games against weaker opposition. This then gives him the confidence to do it against the higher clbutt of opposition too.
Did that make sense?
Benitez has probably realised this and decided to plump for another striker. Perhaps Owen, perhaps a number of continental players with potential. It makes perfect sense to me.
Oh and I bet some glorious Kopite will say something like "Well he's better than Beattie" or something similar. Please think before any of you post this sort of comment. It is irrelevant to the discussion started by Jay.
Cheers.
