To be honest I think Linekar would have stayed as he'd only been at the club one year and had had a great season, (I think he scored 40 goals), whereas Souness had been at Liverpool a while. I thought the board were greedy to cash in on the Barca offer but if European money had been on the horizon maybe they wouldn't have taken the 40 pieces of silver.
I agree that in 86 LFC and EFC both did well, the record books show you did the double but remember that we finished 2nd and were in the cup final also, and as far as I remember we pushed you all the way . I still reckon if Southall hadn't got injured with 9 games to go the double would have been ours, Bobby Mimms was pooe!
I think our team broke up becuase England did well in the world cup and so did the Everton players so they were thrust into the spotlight, whereas your stars were playing for unfashionable international teams, Scotland, Zimbabwe, Australia, Wales, Ireland etc, in fact I'm not even sure if you had any players playing for England in the 86 World Cup. Maybe that's why you held on to your players and we didn't.
