Norton 2004 didn't get the best reviews, to put it mildly. The chances are that the machine will be fine, as far as continuing to run is concerned, unless the slowness is down to impending disk failure as much as malware. Is the disk noisy? Does it sound as though it's constantly labouring, with the hard disk activity light on all the time? Putting a resource hog like Norton 2004 on doesn't help either, as it might accelerate disk failure by taxing further an already overworked disk. In any case this girl should be backing up, especially if she wants to bring all sorts of junk into her computer and then blame others for fixing it.

There's no point running antivirus on Millennium either without first disabling System Restore. If there are viruses located in the Restore folder and its subfolders, as there in all likelihood are, the only way of getting rid of them really is to get at them from a command prompt, before Windows loads, using a startup disk. While you're at it delete the contents of your Temp and Temporary Internet directories. And run a command-line scanner such as Trend Micro's Sysclean (with updated pattern file). That's you need help with these procedures. Change 18 to roman numerals. -- + His Holiness
