Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina is in line to make his international debut for Spain after Iker Casillas suffered a thigh injury while playing for Real Madrid at the weekend. Spain take on Uruguay in Gijon on Wednesday and Reina is on stand-by to step into the breach if Casillas does not recover in time.
Reina is one of four Liverpool players named in Luis Aragones' squad but he's not taking his selection for granted: "The coach will have to decide and the only thing I am sorry about is that Casillas has got injured," he says.
"Nobody likes to get their chance because of an injury suffered by one of their companions and even less when it is Iker. I get on with him really well and I hope he is back as soon as possible."
Reina was also quick to play down the fact that Liverpool have provided more players to the Spain squad for this friendly international than any other club.
"That is just a statistic," he adds. "We had all been called up previously when we were playing for Spanish clubs and now we are all together in a foreign club because Europe is opening the door for Spanish players."
