Steve Hunter 19 November 2005 Rafael Benitez says Luis Garcia is in good form after his hat-trick for Spain helped them qualify for the World Cup Finals and added he is an important player for Liverpool who can be a match winner. The Liverpool manager says Garcia is a clever player who can make things happen for the team and said the Spanish press are thanking Liverpool for helping them to qualify for the World Cup.
Benitez said: "A lot of people are talking really well about Luis. The Spanish press are saying 'Thank you Liverpool' because Luis scored against Slovakia and so did Morientes.
"The headlines in Spain have been similar have been similar to when England beat Germany 5-1 and all the Liverpool players scored.
WeĞre da plantYou don't seem to understand you DUMB f*** that Benitez was brought in to IMPROVE results, performances, entertainment, etc., not to carry on where Houllier left off. If...
"I tried to speak to Luis after the first game but I had to leave a message. It was impossible to get through because all the journalists were calling him. I spoke to him before the second game though.
"He knows what he must do now. He told me he knows he needs to continue doing the same. He is very clever. Luis is in a good situation now. He is confident and he must play the same way for Liverpool now.
"He is in good form. He is happy and that means he can do more things on the pitch. If he is doing good things then he will try them again.
"When a player plays really well he needs to keep it going. I can talk to him for an hour, but it's not the manager who is most important at a time like this, it is the people who are around him all the time, his advisors, his wife, his family who are most important. They can say to him 'calm down, don't get carried away'.
"Luis is someone who can play well throughout the season. I have seen him do that when he played for me at Tenerife. We need to see that now. Last season he scored 13 goals which is not too bad.
"He tries to do different things, but I don't know how many players coming to England for the first time have scored 13 goals in their first season. Not many, maybe."
