A decent enough performance by Villa, without really threatening the goal. The same could be said of the visitors, however, true to form the Scousers stole the three points when Steve Bennett awarded the most dubious penalty since Mark Delaney was penalised for having the ball kicked at his back in Sunderland.
RAFA HAILS HIS 'SUPERSUB' TRIOMark Platt 06 November 2005 Rafael Benitez has praised the impact of his substitutes in the 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Villa Park...
J'Lloyd Samuel was finally dropped, with Barry reverting to left back. And for once, our defence rarely put a foot wrong. They defended far, far better and the two central defenders worked very hard to make sure that a mistake didn't give a silly goal away. Perhaps the midweek lambasting by the manager worked.
CARRA THRILLED WITH VICTORY AT VILLAPaul Eaton 05 November 2005 Jamie Carragher is hoping this afternoon's deserved victory at Aston Villa will be the start of an improved run of results on...
Today's Villa fault were the midfield. Gavin McCann seems to have done 'An Angel', in the fact that he's come back from injury and is now about twice as slow as he was. Steve Davis continued his Lee Hendrie impression of running about and doing very little, Jame Milner has now completed his Carlton Cole impression - after impressing in a few games he has now completely fruitless and Villa's very own Owen Hargreaves, Erik Bakke, did nothing. Nothing at all.
Up front, Baros was rushed back to try and save the manager's face, but lacked the pace we'd previously seen, and the chances set up for him. Kevin Phillips did even less than Erik Bakke.
It was only when Juan Pablo Angel came on when Villa's attack looked like maybe creating something. They didn't.
LUCKY f***Sand probably should have been on balance, but well played United. Nobody could fault them for effort. The thing which impressed me most once again was Chelsea's fitness and the fact...
However, Villa were in fact good for a draw. They certainly didn't deserve to lose the game, as other than a superb save by Sorensen and the fact that Peter Crouch is crap and can't score from a free header.
Seeing this, Steve 'Gordon' Bennett decided to give the worst penalty decision seen at Villa Park for years. Peter Crouch is a streaky, weak player. Liam Ridgewell looks like a werewolf. In a challenge, even a fair one, it is likely that Peter Crouch is going to come off second best. However, Steve 'Gordon' Bennett, who, along with the linesmen had given some rather strange decisions throughout the game, decided to give a penalty. It's unusual for the media to side with Villa, which probably speaks for itself, but the fact that the only people saying this was a penalty is the Liverpool team itself, speaks volumes.
The confidence drained, and it was obvious we'd let in more. And we did.
We have Charlton and Sunderland up next. Any less than four points and this team is in big trouble.
Do not let us down.
gotta love them sour grapes, yum yum....
